Arizona update- Rolling Story

  • East Valley Tribune story - passports in custody and bail info.
  • KPHO Phoenix- Court appearance. You need to scroll down to the video titled "Women arrested in fatal hit and run."
  • Al-Watan newspaper- Pathetic news about making bail of $300 thousand when it is actually $150K plus $75K= $225K!!! The pathetic news also fails to say that one of the girls is not a student at ASU. Finally, Kuwaiti girls never ever drink and drive! Welcome to freedom of press Kuwaiti style! Note: Does this mean any Kuwaiti citizen who gets into trouble will be bailed out like this? Food for thought.
  • Arab Times- azfamily.com story republished here (updated Sept. 17, 2005 at 4.30am US Eastern Time Zone)
  • ASU Web Devil- Accident occured on Alma School Road near Baseline Road (updated Sept. 17, 2005 at 6.00am)
  • Al-Watan- News about Kuwaiti Foreign Minister and Kuwait's Ambassador to the US trying to help, and how that despite making bail, the two girls remain in captivity (updated Sept. 18, 2005 at 2.25am)
P.S. If this post is not displaying correctly it is Blogger's fault!

However, the Kuwait Daily Star mentions them on the first page, and it states that they were heavily drunk and such but without mention of their names :r Although it's pointless since by now it's been circled around Kuwait at least 198273918723 times :r So god knows! But they deserve to rot in prison

Is there a link for the Kuwait Daily Star? Googled it but couldn't find it. My issue with this is not the names or the drunkness etc. My issue is that this is news. Why are people getting mad left and right talking about "What if its your family etc." Well if it was a family member, God Forbid, I wouldn't be worrying about what people are saying right now because there are more pressing issues. Further, people are trying to hide the bits and pieces scattered all over the Internet, thinking we're still in the 60s! WAKE UP PEOPLE YOU'RE WASTING YOUR BREATH (or typing in this case!!)
Anyway, I decided to post the story because it is newsworthy and not because of the people involved. If it was Mohammed and Ahmed I would have still posted it.
Finally, the girls (whom I have zero sympathy for) know who their fathers are. They are respectable figures in Kuwait and should have been MUCH MORE careful/discreet in their actions. An example for the brain-dead (many out there)...If you were the son of a president or minister, do you not realize that? Do you not understand that your actions, however small they are, could be magnified due to your father's stature? Food for thought people!
A question needing an answer: If it was Ahmad and Khaled nobodies, would their bail of $300K be posted like this? Pathetic people. Peace.
P.S. As for rotting in prison, I doubt they will. Phone calls will be made and things will change in the coming days. In the end, I wouldn't be suprised if the poor deceased man ends up charged for being in front of the girl's car!!! You heard it here first!

Well I agree with what you said, and as for a link I believe they don't have a website yet or something like it. I too hate the fact that everyone is trying to shush this topic up with the comment "what if it were your sister" Well I'll tell you what.. my sister would have the decency not to do such thing, and if she did she would remain discreet and not kill a guy while driving drunk. I believe most of their actions are just calling out for attention, and when they get none they are too far along to do anything about what they are doing so they contine just for the mere fun of doing it.

Jackie.. ARE YOU INSANE? "she would remain discreet and not kill a guy while driving drunk.." Please tell me your sister was created with a special gift from God and can actually control what she's doing when she's drunk! They made a mistake! And it's huge I'll grant you that but they were drunk! They didn't WANT to kill the guy! "discreet"? Who are you kidding? My God just when I think human beings are starting to feel more empathy for one another I see comments from people like you. "rot in prison"? Is your heart made from stone? And please don't tell me people are protecting them because of their well known dads. Their fathers aren't even in the upper-half of kuwait's influential men list. Be kind. Be nice. And try to understand that they are kids! 22, 19? Their guilty concience for what they have done to De Gain, his family, their families, their country and themselves will be the worst punishment. Far worse than prison, I bet they wish they were dead now. Feel sympathy for both sides, and put urself in their position because it could happen to ANYONE (and this would not necessarily include alcohol). Think, haven't you ever made any misjudgements in your life?

I know these girls, from each and every irresponsible action they took, all these years for the 22 women and the one year the other girl spent here drunk and careless and abusive, they deserve to be rot in jail, and regardless their bad history and reputation, they still drove under the influence and killed a man, we have a sign on one of the streets lights near by school says, "don't drink and drive."

Abdul I wouldnt think that Mohammed or Ahmad would drink! Though they've been to a club once or twice but I think they still had their morals along with them. These are GIRLS! Your family has sent you out there to make them proud and come back with a degree that they can brag about with friends and family!
Come on people we have nothing against these girls, we all barely know them if not for their fathers! but what they did was a shame to our country! Nowadays you'd think you're better of saying I'm from a different country then say you're Kuwaiti from what our people are doing! "Wa Saya3lamo Elatheena Thalamo Be`aya Monqaleben Yanqaleboon". God bless Kuwait, America and all the pure souls out there!

Ladies and Gentlemen, People of Earth,
What happened happened. We are not here to fix this, or even fix ourselves. The news stated the facts, and we either learn the good and move on, or simply move on. Boys will be boys and girls will be girls. They made a mistake, it's their problem. What I think I would learn from this is that you must be aware of your surroundings, and cautious at all times so that you do not shame yourself, or people related to you. Now, yes what they did was very shameful, but life goes on. The man died it was destiny for all of this to happen. Call off the dogs people for this news just fizzled big time as of today. Who cares!
P.S. One of the girls is majoring in geography. No pun intended. Ok maybe just a little bit. Peace people

Anon,
"And please don't tell me people are protecting them because of their well known dads. Their fathers aren't even in the upper-half of kuwait's influential men list." This is the funniest thing I read since this story broke. Thanks for the comic relief. By the way where is that "list" again? Peace!

Shamed our country? What the hell are you talking about? half the things that happen on our own soil shame our "pressie" country.
Drinking and driving is all over the place in Kuwait and yet you never hear of such a big deal on the news here. Oh I forgot, that is because some big shot hit an Indian riding his bike on Thursday night (acually thursday morning) and killed him, but that is not news, it was no biggie.
People make mistakes, yes these girls have made a big one, they will have to live with thier conscience for the rest of thier lives as will thier children and thier childrens children. We are entitled to our own opinions yes, but don't be hypocritical.

People,
The story has died down. Get a grip "haves" and "non-hypocritical" people. It will rise again when their trial starts. As for the anon comment about "half the things that happen on our own soil shame our 'pressie' country," well that is the difference between democracy and whatever you call what you have. The Arizona local media would have covered this story no matter who the people involved where. History has plenty of examples including coverage of drunk presidents themselves, their family members, etc. As for your big shot who hit an Indian comment, well that is exactly the point. Because he is a big shot, the media chicken away from covering it. Even you do or else why not name names. So who is the hypocrite again here? Get a grip please. Peace!

How ashamed all Kuwait must be to have these two women represent your country. The two drivers that killed Mr DeGain, were apparently returning home from a night of drinking around 2:30am.

The first driver was charged with *extreme* DUI, having struck Mr DeGain and dragged the body several hundred feet. The second driver, also, DUI, then struck the body as well. After a pause, both vehicles sped off (leaving the scene of a serious accident). The first drive, being so drunk, hit a light pole, and the pair was caught shortly thereafter. If you would like more details, just ask: this is only 200m from my house!

Both women are ASU college students, and Kuwaiti citizens. Fearing that they would flee the country, their passports were taken. This does little good, you don't need a passport to *leave* a country. Many feared that they would never see a trial.

Both women reportedly are of families with government connections in Kuwait. Perhaps this would explain why this afternoon, the charges were reduced to simply "leaving the scene". Two drunk little rich college girls skate. A father lies slaughtered in the street.

How proud Kuwait must be!

I guess it pays to have friends in the Kuwait government!

I'm not a kuwaiti nor I live in the states. However, the story was shocking to me as I am an arab girl living aboard and we all have reputation to look out for. I hope the girls get what they deserve, bailing them out wouldn't help them learn their lesson, it encourages everyone else with connections to do as they like and they'll get out that easy. Money can't buy the life of Todd DeGain back. They have let their families down big time! They took away a soul and a father of 7 yr old kid and, to make things even worse, they escaped the scene of the accident!! Their conscience will torture them for life. Don't they know drinking is a sin in Islam? that's what people get from drinking. The girls are mature to take responisbilities of their own actions, after all thats the main point of living aboard alone!
And yes people do make mistakes but everyone pays for their own mistakes! Anyways, who are we to judge those girls? they'll get their real punished from Allah.

It is unfortunate that your comment had to be removed. We appreciate your comments very much but there is a fine line between free speech and slander. This is not the place to bring up personal issues about the two women's past etc. Thank you for understanding.
